After months of teaser shots and cameo appearances, Dell has officially announced the price and other details to be changed Adamo Dell XPS laptop. Without setting a specific date, Dell said it expects to “start taking orders and shipping XPS Adamo in time for the holidays.” Ultrathin laptop that starts at the luxury $ 1799.

We have the opportunity to take a quick test drive with the XPS Adamo earlier this week, and catch some hands-on record in the handheld Flip video camera.

Our first impression of Adamo largely remain the same once you get to handle it further. The system is ridiculously thin, especially for 13-inch laptop. Unlike the 11-inch Sony Vaio X, which weighs next to nothing, which Adamo feels a bit heavier than it looks, even with solid-state hard drive. Dell says Adamo starts at 3.2 pounds, which is almost two times the weight Vaio X.

The Adamo open in an unusual way, with the lid closed until you swipe a finger on the heat sensitive strip centered on the front edge. Then lift the lid, tilt the screen back and lift the keyboard to the hinge inset unusual.

At least in nonfinal version we played together, opening the action was not as smooth as we want. When using one hand to lift the lid, at the halfway point the front of the keyboard tray itself began to lift from the table, requires us to keep our hands off the other.

When fully opened, the keyboard may be sitting at 20 degrees. This unusual setup, but one which provides a typing experience is more ergonomic than the average laptop keyboard. We also like the metal keyboard and touchpad buttons are quite large.

Components of the system seems to be located behind the screen, as the ports (two USB, a headphone jack, power connections, and mini DisplayPort) are on the edge of the lid. The screen itself is a 13.4-inch LED, with a resolution of 1366 x768. Close the Adamo has a larger footprint than the bottom, and when closed, the keyboard fits in the inset bottom lid.

With a 128GB solid-state drives and Intel ULV 1.4GHz processor, we have high hopes for the system battery, which Dell claims is up to 2.5 hours with standard battery and a little more than 5 hours with optional extended battery (which we have not seen in Direct yet.)

While the new Adamo has a much more radical than the unique design of the original MacBook-like Adamo, a high starting price means that there may be handed over to the coffee shop curio status, along with other luxury laptops like Sony’s Vaio X, and HP Envy 13. Not that there’s anything wrong with that; high-end-product concept cars such as this always dripped their technological development to the mainstream system on the road. [via][via]
